10c Container Deposit Legislation SA
The South Australian Government passed container deposit legislation (CDL) back in 1975
The primary aim of SA container deposit legislation was to try to reduce the amount of beverage containers; glass bottles, aluminium cans, plastic bottles and cardboard drink containers littering our beautiful state or ending up in landfill dumps.
Originally, 5 cents was added to the price of certain drink containers; targeting smaller sized containers, typically purchased by people who were away from their homes; from delicatessens and convenience shops, that could be collected when handing the container over to a collection depot for recycling.
The goal of reducing waste in landfills and litter in parks and rivers was a huge success; so much so in 2003 the South Australian Government widened the list of containers covered.
The containers covered by the scheme are detailed on the container deposit refund page of our website.
In 2008, the deposit refund increased to 10 cents and the scheme has become a substantial employer for the waste and recycling industries.
Adelaide Hills Recycling Centre located at 28 Henry Street Woodside also accepts waste and rubbish, brought in by local Adelaide Hills home owners in addition to the 10 cent container deposit refund products including scrap metal and glass.
